Georgia Workers' Compensation FAQ

What is workers’ compensation?

Workers’ compensation is a legally enforced bill of rights in the state of Georgia that says that all companies must provide for any employee who has been injured or fallen ill as a result of their work. Workers’ compensation provides money to the employee for their medical bills, travel to medical appointments, loss of wages and many others.

This money is available to anyone working in Georgia who has been injured or fallen ill as a result of their work, regardless of fault or guilt, except in very rare cases.

I’ve been injured or become ill at work, what should I do?

The first thing you should always do is obtain quick and thorough medical attention. In many physical injuries this requires calling 911, having paramedic attention and being taken to the nearest emergency department for evaluation and treatment. This emergency care is completely covered by your company’s insurance provider if the injury occurred as a result of your work.

Your next step is to let your company know about the injury. This should be done in some verifiable way, such as a letter with signature required for delivery, but can also be done verbally as well. You should let your immediate supervisor or manager know about the injury or illness as soon as possible.

If your injury or illness at work took place anywhere in Georgia you can contact our law firm at one of our offices in Atlanta for a free consultation. You can learn how to save money, obtain all of your benefits and more with the help of a qualified attorney.

Do non-workplace injuries get covered by workers’ compensation?

If your injury took place while you were engaged in some form of work for your company then you are usually covered completely. This can be while driving to a work related function, while attending a conference, or at any work related function or event. Please contact us to learn more about what can be covered and what is not.

Are only medical related expenses covered by workers’ compensation?

This depends on your individual circumstances but often in Georgia workers’ compensation covers much more than medical expenses only. These other expenses can include travel to and from medical appointments, some therapies and your lost wages.

In some cases where the person is unable to perform the same job duty this workers’ compensation can cover job training or rehabilitation to perform another job and job seeking assistance or other related costs.

If your injuries or illness is lifelong you can be entitled to a significant payment of a one time settlement or lifelong payments. Contact our office to learn exactly what your rights are and what we can do for you.

How much do your lawyers cost?

In most every Georgia workers’ compensation case we handle the entire issue via contingent fee. The contingent fee is a legally preset amount of your successfully won award. The contingent fee allows you to hire experienced and professional lawyers immediately, without paying expensive upfront legal costs.

If you hire a lawyer on a contingent fee and they fail to settle your case you do not pay them these fees at all.
